Toothbrushes in a cup – daily dental care for children

Your tailor-made prevention programme

We offer you and your child a prevention programme that matches their age and dental situation exactly. We advise you about the causes of tooth decay, show you the correct brushing technique and how your little one's teeth should be cleaned and cared for. With fluorides we additionally protect the tooth surfaces.

Regular professional cleaning of the teeth at the practice is the basis for effective dental care. Prevention at home and professional support from us together form a successful path to healthy, well-cared-for children's teeth.

Prophylaxis helps to avoid extensive treatment. Because a clean baby tooth falls ill considerably less often.

Mother with toddler

The first attempts at brushing on their own

From birth we recommend gently cleaning the toddler's gum ridge after every meal – wiping it with a cotton bud and massaging it lightly.

Once the first baby tooth is there, daily dental care should begin: at first carefully with no more than a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and a soft brush, initially even just with a cotton bud.

From the second year of life children can be guided towards their first attempts at brushing on their own. By the end of the second year of life the baby teeth should be brushed at least once a day – ideally before going to bed.

Toothbrush and dental floss for daily oral hygiene

The first dental care: cleaning baby teeth daily

Use a special mini toothbrush with soft, multi-tufted and rounded bristles.

From the second birthday at the latest, the teeth should generally be brushed twice a day – in the morning and in the evening before going to bed, with a small amount of children's toothpaste.

At the check-up appointment we show you and your child together how this works best – and what is realistically achievable in everyday life.

Children's prophylaxis at the practice

It is important for your child to come to us regularly from the first tooth for check-ups, brushing and dietary advice and prophylaxis.

During children's prophylaxis your children are informed about correct, child-appropriate dental care and a healthy diet – explained in an age-appropriate way and practised hands-on.

Our treatments take place in a room designed especially for children. This gives your child the opportunity to be introduced to dental treatment without fear and light-heartedly.

For children from the age of six, cleaning and fluoride varnish are covered twice a year by the statutory health insurance funds.

Therapy for chalky teeth

Chalky teeth have considerably softer and thinner enamel than healthy teeth. Healthy enamel consists mainly of mineral salts such as fluorine, calcium and phosphate and is so hard that it withstands heavy loads during chewing.

With chalky teeth this composition is disturbed. The so-called hypomineralisation makes the enamel softer, the surface is rougher and more sensitive. Typical signs are cloudy white or yellow-brown spots and increased sensitivity to pain. Chalky teeth develop decay more frequently.

Our basic treatment is thorough dental hygiene with highly concentrated, fluoride-containing preparations. For lasting protection, consistent dental care, treatment as early as possible and regular check-ups are decisive.

Frequently Asked Questions

From what age do I have to brush my baby's teeth?
Daily dental care should begin as soon as the first baby tooth is there. At the beginning a cotton bud or a very soft brush with a tiny amount of toothpaste is enough. Even before the first tooth you can gently wipe the gum ridge after meals.
How much toothpaste may my child use?
For small children an amount no bigger than a pea is enough. More important than the amount is that the toothpaste suits the age and that all the teeth are really reached. At the check-up appointment we are happy to show you this in practice.
How often should children's teeth be brushed?
Up to the end of the second year of life at least once a day, ideally before going to bed. From the second birthday the teeth should generally be brushed twice a day – in the morning and in the evening.
What are chalky teeth (MIH)?
With chalky teeth the enamel is softer and thinner than normal. Typical signs are cloudy white or yellowish-brown patches and increased sensitivity. Affected teeth develop decay more often, which is why thorough hygiene, fluoridation and regular check-ups are particularly important.
Does health insurance pay for teeth cleaning for children?
For children from the age of six, cleaning and fluoride varnish are covered twice a year by the statutory health insurance funds. Anything beyond that we discuss with you beforehand.
